Mom Fined for Not Giving Including Ritz Crackers in Their Kids Lunch

by Lambert and Lindsey posted Nov 19 2013 8:35AM
This was the note that was sent home with the kids. Their lunch included leftover homemade roast beef and potatoes, carrots, an orange and some milk. But the school said there wasn't a "grain" so they gave the kids Ritz Crackers and fined the mother $5 a kid.

What do you think?

twisted priorities
we ask children to eat slowly and give them 15 minutes to eat. we do things like the image above but serve pizza and french fries. If the School can without dispute fine a parent then the reverse should also be true

Who has the time for this?
When are these kids lunches being inspected, and by whom? I guess that's why Ritz crackers (um they're butter flavored) cost $ they can pay the lunch inspector. If the kids were obviously hungry ok GIVE them some more food, otherwise how about focus on TEACHING them!

Reaching into Personal territory
Just curious. How far is too far? Teachers are supposed to look for and report suspected abuse, look for and prevent "bullying" and pretty much anything else that may involve the kids at school but trying to enforce a a diet is too far? Honestly asking the question not trying to be a mean.

Mixed feelings
We have to do this for my sons preschool due to a state law. I don't think they would charge us $5 for crackers though! School lunch only costs less than $3 and they said they would address it on an individual basis if it became an issue. I am glad schools are beginning to care that our children are getting nutritious food, because it is important to fuel the body and brain with the right ingredients needed for learning. However, it is also a little frustrating! My child almost never drinks his milk at lunch. I feel like I am wasting money on milk that goes down the drain. He always drinks milk at breakfast and gets plenty of other dairy during the day. I think it is just a time of day thing for him. When looking at his food intake throughout the day it is balanced for his needs. Plus, sometimes I just don't have time to get to the grocery store if we are out of a lunch item! My child is actually underweight due to issues that were'nt diagnosed until he was 3 and that we are still wirking to correct. All 3 of my other children are well within normal limits for their ages. I think I am capable of deciding what is appropriate for my child's lunch box!

That is ridiculous to charge $5 per child for crackers, did they eat two boxes each? I would NOT pay that and if after talking to the school the school board would hear from me for sure. NUTS
